Blood flow restriction

What Is Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training?

BFR is a research-backed way to build strength and muscle using much lighter weights than usual — by briefly and safely limiting blood flow to the working limb with a calibrated cuff. It's especially useful when heavy lifting isn't an option yet: after surgery, during a painful flare, or when a joint needs protecting.

How BFR works

A specialized cuff is placed high on your arm or leg and inflated to a precise, personalized pressure. That partly limits blood flow while you exercise with light loads, so the muscle fatigues quickly and responds as if it had done a much heavier workout — letting you build strength and size without the joint stress of heavy weights.

Why the Delfi device matters

805 uses the gold-standard Delfi system. Instead of guessing at a one-size cuff pressure, the Delfi measures your individual limb occlusion pressure and sets the exact amount for you — which makes BFR both safer and more effective. It's the difference between a calibrated medical tool and an off-the-shelf band.

Who BFR can help

  • Recovering from surgery or injury, when heavy loading isn't safe yet
  • Dealing with joint pain or arthritis that makes heavy lifting uncomfortable
  • Athletes who want to add training volume while sparing the joints
  • Anyone rebuilding strength after time off

Research supports BFR for building strength and muscle comparably to heavy lifting in these situations — often with noticeable change in a few weeks.

How it works at 805

BFR is usually woven right into your one-on-one PT/Fitness session or as a stand alone service — Sandy assesses whether it's appropriate, applies and monitors it herself, and adjusts as you progress.

Common questions

Does it hurt?

You'll feel a tight squeeze and quick muscle fatigue, not sharp pain.

Is it safe?

With a calibrated device and a PT guiding it, BFR has a strong safety record; Sandy screens to make sure it's right for you.

Do I need heavy weights?

No — that's the point: light loads, real gains.
